You can almost feel how she recorded her lines sitting at home watching footage and trying to riff as she goes with no one to proof it. The narrator is not funny and strays toward really corny lame jokes. And as another user said, they don’t quite explain the prize pool: does everyone get $100k? Is it split between the remaining contestants? The stakes need to be higher and involve people straight up getting booted off if they even so much as kiss. The fact is nobody really seems to care much about the money because they’re seemingly pretty wealthy anyway. It doesn’t matter how someone pitched Orgy Island to you, nobody is that forward, not even the shallow Instagrammer squad. Some of the conversation feels so artificial especially in the opening scene when they’re talking about fucking each other in less than a few seconds of meeting each other. I’ve been watching THTH and I’m like four episodes in. Even as a fan of trashy dating TV, this a new low. The characters are meant to be recovering assholes, yet the narration makes sure to paint them as assholes throughout.

It's just described to the audience by a Siri-esque robot, with actual details bleeped out.Īrmed with all of this incomprehensible footage, Netflix clearly thought they could fix it in the edit by letting a comedian just riff over the whole thing. A 'Fantasy Suite' comes into play, where multiple couples ultimately have sex. They institute a 'green light' system to allow some kissing and sexual touch. So they toss in new players without any real order, attempting to spice up dynamics. They expected these hot singles to crawl over each other, but instead had a complete slog of footage. It's obvious that the producers largely just made this show up as they went along. The last episode randomly announces that only a select number of players will 'win' - without ever really establishing goals or rules. Contestants are eliminated entirely at the will of the producers, just culling out people who aren't having enough sex or starting enough drama. When more people join the group, it's never explained if everyone's cut of the pot is being appropriately reduced. It's never clearly explained how much different 'sexual acts' cost the group, nor what information about those acts has to be exposed to the rest of the group. The rules are completely inconsistent, and ill explained. Nobody seems to actually care about the prize money, which might be due to the next issue. For the couples that do emerge, they get reckless with the rules almost immediately. But it never really happens, as these pairs take the obvious route of just not sleeping with each other. Almost immediately, there's a drought of tension as obviously incompatible couples are edited to create the possibility of chemistry. To start, the cast immediately lacks sexual chemistry beyond two of the five possible couples. But clearly the team behind THTH had no idea what to do with the setup. Take a bunch of sex obsessed reality wannabes, and give them a crahs course on actual human relationships.

On paper, it's a clever takedown of sex obsessed reality TV shows like Love Island & Bachelor in Paradise. And every time they engage in 'sexual activity', money is eliminated. Instead, they're hit with a twist - they're actually competing (?) for a part of a $100,000 prize pool. If you're out of the loop, the basic pitch of THTH is ten international singles congregate on a tropical resort with the expectation of open sex and wild fun.

Instead, I got one of the most poorly constructed reality shows in recent history. I sat down this evening expecting 'Too Hot To Handle' to continue this streak - some corny reality fun to distract from the real world.

'Dating Around' was a sharply crafted take on reality romance, 'The Circle' was a fun bit of social gamesmanship, and 'Love is Blind' was an enjoyable trainwreck full of memorable characters. So, I've mostly enjoyed Netflix's recent run of reality programming.
